 Welcome to Smarden ........................

By all written and spoken accounts, Smarden is said to be a Special Place in two senses: first, as a small rural medieval weaving village, it is endowed with great physical beauty and charm. Secondly, Smarden hosts a vibrant community, which wishes to preserve things that are good about its heritage and, for the future, to shape a sustainable environment sensitive to the needs of its residents. With both these things, there seems also to be an underlying sense of continuity.

Calor Village of the Year Competition

Smarden has been named as winner of the South England Region competition 2008, winning both the Business and Environment categories.

This follows success as overall winner of the Kent Village of the Year Competition 2007, in which Smarden won the Community Life and Information Technology categories; was runner-up in the Business in the Community and Older People categories; and was highly commended in the areas of Environmental Action and Young People. Smarden also won a National Award in 2007 for Community Empowerment – Older People category.

Many thanks to everyone who supports our community and who has helped in anyway to achieve these successes.

The overall competition winner for England was Levington, in Suffolk, and the overall winner for the UK was the Isle of Barra, Western Isles, Scotland.
